February 7th, 2009 – “Best of the Southwest” Tournament– Graham HS
This weekend the varsity Panthers traveled to the home of the defending 2008 HS National Champion Graham Falcons2008 to compete in the "Best of the Southwest" Tournament. While there were only 11 teams there, the competition was tough, and the Panthers got in some very good matches in their last tournament before Sectionals on 2/21. Competing well, and with only 13 wrestlers, the Panthers were able to pull out a second place finish in the team race, but were unable to crown any individual champions. They finished with 161.5 points, a distant 2nd to Graham who had 324.5 points, and just ahead of Lakota West (160) and Troy Christian (149.5). The Panthers were paced by Alec Lamancusa(215) and Pat Elflein(285) who both made it into their respective championship matches and finished as runners-up, and by Josh Will(112) and Matt Ferguson(160) who each took 3rd place. Michael Loeffler also advanced to the 3rd place match but was unable to wrestle it because of the OHSAA "5 match" rule. Quite a feat considering that he certified at only 160lbs and was giving up about 20 lbs in each bout. Individual wrestlers who placed in the tournament are listed below in weight class order.
