Water Softener Salt Delivered and Stacked
at Your Home Where You Want It!
A Tradition of Community Service
The annual water softener salt sale is a 14 year tradition and one of the primary fund raising events for the Pickerington Junior and Senior High wrestling programs. Both Central and North Senior High and Junior High wrestling team students and parents participate in the sale, with profits being divided equally between the 2 clubs. All wrestlers (Jr. High and HS) are required to work this event (except if excused by the coach).
We have many repeat customers who rely on this service year after year because we not only deliver as much salt as needed for a full year, we stack it neatly wherever the homeowner wants it - garage, basement, attic, you name it. As such, this fund raiser is not just a fund raiser - but also a community service - as many of our customers who need the salt, simply can't or shouldn't carry the bags themselves. Also, since 2008, a portion of the profits are donated to the PCMA Food Pantry of Pickerington. In 2009 we delivered and stacked 5,129 bags of salt for over 200 customers and donated $610.57 to the food pantry.
For our Parents and Wrestlers:
What happens during the "Salt Sale"?
Prices are negotiated, flyers are made up and mailed out, and orders are taken. On "delivery day" nearly all of the salt is delivered to the customer's homes beginning early in the morning and usually finishing up before supper. Some of the salt is kept in a tent and sold to drive up customers, from the parking lot of Pickerington North High School. Many orders are prepaid so all that is required is finding the house and carrying in the bags, but some collecting of checks is required. For the past several years we have had over 200 different orders for a total of over 5000 forty-pound bags of salt delivered to Pickerington, Canal Winchester, Baltimore, Carroll and more. This is a lot of bags and the work goes much better with as many volunteers as possible. While this is a lot of bags, we have been able to finish all deliveries by 3:00pm the past several years.
Delivery Teams - What we need:
This is where you come in. VOLUNTEERS! We really need as many parents as possible to help. We need many drivers to transport wrestlers, salt, or both. If you have a big truck or heavy duty trailer that could handle 2.5 ton loads let us know and we will assign you your own routes with support vans and pickups. Depending on what trucks are available, a few volunteers may be required to have a CDL drivers licence to drive a large rental truck. It is a great help if each delivery group has a lead vehicle with a navigator who has a GPS navigation system or smart phone mapping application. If you do not have a GPS system consider borrowing one, especially if you will be having your own route. A clipboard and a few pens are also good to have at hand for the parents collecting checks and updating order information.
If you have a pickup truck, trailer or other large vehicle capable of hauling more than 10 bags (400 lbs) at a time, you may be given your own route(s) closer to town so you can resupply when needed. Smaller vehicles hauling wrestlers and pickups will be paired up with one of the large trucks/trailers to travel further out from town making short runs to and from the big trucks.
Wrestlers should wear sturdy shoes, dress in layers, and bring gloves to protect their hands for the hard plastic handles on the bags. In recent years our booster club members have put together sac breakfasts and lunches for the wrestlers and their drivers. This greatly seeds up the work and helps keep delivery crews on the road. We meet at PHSN parking lot at 7:00 am and are usually done around 3:00
How you can help:
This fund raising event could not be done without the help of volunteer parents and the wrestlers. This is a big job but the rewards are many. I hope you can see how this is a bit more than just Wrestling's biggest fund raiser, and you can find it in your heart to give up a morning and part of an afternoon to help your community. I think you will find that should you do that, you will end up having a great time and share the bond that only 40lb bags of salt can forge.
Thanks in advance for your help.
